Sited on a forested bluff overlooking Lake Michigan is a complex of six student residences serving the liberal arts Carthage College. Instead of building one massive structure, a series of smaller, triangular shaped villas are nestled in among the trees. The serrated triangle shape was created to maximize views toward the lake and into the forest and to minimize views towards other buildings. Each student room has wall to wall glass.
Each floor of each building is designed as a stand-alone house, with 12 single rooms, 2 double rooms, and a great room with a lounge, kitchenette, and dining area. Students with specialized interests, such as a common language study program, have the opportunity of living together on each floor. Professors are encouraged to conduct small seminars in the lounges.
